Tony started his career in a number of financial roles with major consumer companies - Unilever, L'Oreal and PepsiCo. In 1998 he was appointed CFO of Asda PLC and in 2002 was promoted to President and CEO of Asda/Wal-Mart UK, the UK's number two food retailer. Asda was voted the UK's Favourite Supermarket and the UK's Best Place to Work.
 
In 2005 Tony was appointed Executive Chairman of Maxeda. In 2004 Maxeda was taken private by a group of private equity funds, consisting of KKR, Permira, Cinven and AlpInvest Partners. The company is the largest non-food retailer in the Netherlands with net sales of € 3.1 billion and an estimated 8% share of the Dutch non-food retailing sector. Maxeda operates ten retail formats in the Department store, DIY and Apparel sectors and has 1,420 outlets and approximately 30,000 employees in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark, Germany, France, Spain, Middle East and Eastern Europe.
 
Tony is also a non-executive director of Alliance Boots Ltd and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Manchester Business School. Previously he was Deputy Chairman of Galiform PLC. 
 
Tony was awarded the CBE in 2005 for services to the retail industry and won the Grocer Award for Outstanding Business Achievement in 2004.
